Synopsis:
On the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic's sinking, a new American-built ship called the "SS Titanic II" sets sail from New York to Southampton. However, the forces of nature are set to repeat history as the crew and passengers struggle to avoid the same fate as its predecessor.
Background:
This fan edit is technically made before I came up with the Starlight Fan Edits name and the After Last Season fan edit, but since this is what I consider to be the first fully completed fan edit (not counting old tests and unfinished WIP edits), I decided to finally release it publically after 4 years. It is an edit of the Asylum mockbuster "Titanic II" which has no connection to the James Cameron film and takes cues from that film and The Poseidon Adventure. It's not a film an editor would really do, but I decided to do it since I do get some ironic enjoyment from it. The rescoring was completely done with Audacity and in an era where AI Vocal Remover wasn't a thing, I had to use a lot of noise reduction and replacing of sound effects to make it possible. The scores I chose were from The Poseidon Adventure, Raise the Titanic, Titanic, and 1917 with latter being due to me loving that film a lot around that time (it's still one of my favorite films, but it's lower on the list though). There will be two versions I will provide: the Original Release as it was in 2021 and a revisited "Anniversary Edition" I made in 2022 afterwards. The Anniversary Edition adds the opening logos and a post-credits scene, but aside from that, there isn't too much different. This is just to show where I was back then as an editor.
Goals:
Make the film as enjoyable as possible by rescoring the film with music from John Williams (The Poesidon Adventure), John Barry [re-recorded by The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra] (Raise the Titanic), James Horner (Titanic), and Thomas Newman (1917). With the film's story being broken from conception (due to it being made to cash-in on Titanic), I aimed it at making it an entertaining watch with recognizable themes and trimming down of the run time to make it easier to get through. Some cuts have been made to fix a film mistake/inconsistency or trim down the runtime. Certain sound effects were added to replace sounds affected by the noise reduction. I also added a Wilhelm Scream in a scene where the guy falls through the ice because I thought it would be funny (it was also inspired from a reviewer of this film as well). The Anniversary Edition also includes a post-credits scene that ties the film into its unfortunate horror sequel Titanic 666.
Change List:
• Added scores from James Horner (Titanic), John Williams (The Poseidon Adventure), John Barry (Raise the Titanic), and Thomas Newman (1917). Some remnants of the original score can be heard but they tend to be interwoven with the new music.
• Added scores from James Horner (Titanic), John Williams (The Poseidon Adventure), John Barry (Raise the Titanic), and Thomas Newman (1917). Some remnants of the original score can be heard but they tend to be interwoven with the new music.
• Attempted brighten up many scenes that take place at night (especially outside) and underwater as they tend to be very dark (mostly to hide the bad CGI effects).
• Added theater grain to smooth out lighting.
• Added a Wilhelm Scream sound effect as a man falls through the cracking ice. Idea based from YouTuber Headhunter Productions' review of the film.
• Removed the scene of the Chief Engineer running through the hallway since the windows showed a city in the background creating a blatant movie mistake. We now cut to him on the deck of the ship to remove this obvious mistake.
• Removed scene of Captain James Maine in the helicopter trying to get Captain William Howard to respond by saying "I repeat "USS Titanic II" come in!" This is to create consistency of the Titanic II being called the "SS Titanic II" since a ship with the name of USS is reserved for United States military vessels which Titanic II is clearly not. The scene now cuts to the captain walking to the ship computers with James Maine now edited saying "I repeat "SS Titanic II" come in!" with the U cut out from the sentence.
• Trimmed the ending of the explosion scene to fit it in with the music.
• Removed scene of Amy and Hayden running to the diving facility in slow motion as it looks jarring.
• Sped up a bit of the end credits and have the logo stop scrolling when "Engländer" by Thomas Newman hits its final climatic note.
• (Anniversary Edition) Added Starlight Fan Edits logo.
• (Anniversary Edition) Added a custom Asylum logo (the sounds come from 1997 Home Entertainment logo)
• (Anniversary Edition) Added a post-credits scene which includes shots of the ocean and iceberg while we hear ghost groaning sounds. This is to tie it into the film's 2022 horror sequel Titanic 666 which involves ghosts (and a Titanic III).
