Synopsis:
Matthew Andrews (Jason Kulas) and Sarah Austin (Peggy McClellan) are medical interns studying neurology at the Prorolis Corporation. When a serial killer begins murdering their fellow students, they use experimental chips to visualize the events of the crimes.
Background:
After Last Season is a 2009 film directed, written, and produced by Mark Region. The film has garnered an infamous reputation for it's poor story, acting, sets, music, special effects, etc. with the director himself being a figure shrouded in mystery. Following the film's unsuccessful limited release, the 35 mm prints were reportedly destroyed at the request of Mark Region's film company Index Square. The only copies that remain of the film are obscure DVD copies that can be found on Amazon and an internet archive of Joseph James' 1080p upscale of the film which remains as the highest quality version of the film I can find. The director Mark Region himself also disappeared from the face of the internet as his whereabouts are unknown although Index Square seems to be still active with the aforementioned upscale of the film being taken down from YouTube by them. Since ralphthemoviemaker's review which brought some renewed attention of the film, I (along with many other critics who saw the film during its release) can definitely agree that it is definitely one of the worst films ever made (if not, of all time).
If you want some more information on the film itself, I recommend checking this article out and some of the other reviews and anaylsis videos on YouTube (especially ralphthemoviemaker's review of the film since this is the video that got me interested in the first place). They do more justice to explaining this film than I ever can.
Goals:
The reason I decided to make an edit on this atrocious film in the first place is that I saw that there's something about the film that can be salvaged and that's the music and the editing. The film has a pretty bad score by Michael Windham which is just brief MIDI piano noises and the editing that's outright poor. This is mainly where the "Kubrick Cut" name of the edit comes into play; I added classical music Kubrick would've probably used (this includes various pieces by György Ligeti during the silent neurological sequences) and edited the film (which is heavily based on 2001: A Space Odyssey) by adding an Intermission and a 1 minute opening of nothing with Atmosphères by György Ligeti. Of course, the padding and uneccessary scenes were cut down as well. In other words, I attempted to edit the film as if Stanley Kubrick was at the helm directing (even if the scenes don't really reflect his film style as I technically gave the edit this name because of the music and editing).
I should mention that this edit was actually made around 2021 (completed in early 2022) and later remastered with the Joseph James 1080p upscale (the edit was the first to be made under the Starlight Fan Edits label). So I hope you enjoy this travesty of a film I tried to "fix".

• Used "Music for the Funeral of Queen Mary" by Henry Purcell as the intro music (from A Clockwork Orange)
• Added in "Starlight Fan Edits" logo.
• Redid the opening title sequence of the film (since most of it was in low quality 360p or 480p) and added "A Mark Region Film" title card.
• Removed the line "I'm going to take one cross section" which is an outtake the editor (Vincent Grass) for some reason didn't cut out.
• Reduced padding in the pointless still shots (this is prominent throughout the entire film). Although Kubrick does use long shots in his film, it's to set up pacing and give a sense of tension/build-up rather than trying to stretch out the film.
• Added in "Gayane Ballet Suite (Adagio)" by Aram Khachaturian (from 2001: A Space Odyssey).
• Cut down the scene where a foreign exchange student is talking to a character I forgot the name of. The taped clock to a radio scene is also removed.
• Throughout the film, I added fragments of "Isle of the Dead, Op. 29" by Sergei Rachmaninoff to add a piece of music in certain scenes to evoke a sense of mystery and uncertainty. It is done similar to how Kubrick would have a reoccurring piece of classical music in his film.
• Removed shot of the "Prorolis Corporation" building which looks terrible (since the words of the company were added in post-production) and replaced it with a shot of a building I took in Bellevue. The footage has been colored corrected to match up with the film.
• Removed awkward shot of Sarah of standing before she walks forward and asks about the floor. There are many scenes in the film in which the characters stand still before performing their actions. This is because Vincent Grass (or possibly Mark Region as some have speculated), for some reason left in the parts that would take place before the "action" begins in the filming process.
• Added a transition in the scene where the professor is talking about the brain since the original editing cuts to her in front of the desk which makes it look like she teleported from behind.
• Cut down the introduction of Sarah's phone conversation.
• Removed Sarah's conversation with another student since it adds nothing to the story and is pointless.
• Cut down the beginning scene where we see Matthew walking to the building (since he stands still before walking).
• Cut down scenes involving Matthew looking at a paper that describes the machine which can see each other's thoughts.
• Removed scenes of Sarah walking towards the (cardboard) building.
• In the neurological sequences, music from György Ligeti (and Krzysztof Penderecki) is used since most of these scenes have no music and are completely silent.
• Many shots in between the neurological sequences have been trimmed.
• An Intermission from 2001: A Space Odyssey had been added to give a create a sense of time between Matthew leaving to find info on the murder and him coming back to Sarah (and to give the audience a brief break from this film).
• "Kanon" by Krzysztof Penderecki is used in the scene where the killer is attacking Matthew and Sarah.
• Cut down the scene where after the "dream", Sarah is asking Matthew questions for an assignment (along with adding "Études, Book 1: No. 4, Fanfares" by György Ligeti).
• A stock footage of a clock is used to show the passing of time in the scene where Sarah is asking Matthew some questions (while also being color corrected to match the film).
• Cut down a lot of padding in the scene where Sarah and Matthew talk to Craig's ghost (while using "Violin Concerto" by György Ligeti).
• Removed the line "Eric Nelson was trying to enter research laboratory?" since the line delivery sounds awkward.
• Removed Matthew's pointless phone conversation.
• Trim down the scene where Matthew looks around and says "Craig?" after his coat falls down.
• Added the ending of "Isle of the Dead, Op. 29" by Sergei Rachmaninoff at the end credits.
